Newsletter - December 2010

Here's what you'll find in our December newsletter:

Farewell 2010

I can't believe another year is almost over. It has been a big year for Trade Risk, and I thought I'd share some of our milestones with you:

  • February - New website launched.
  • July - Obtained our own accreditation for general insurance.
  • August - Placed 22nd in Anthill Magazines 'Smart100' list of Australian businesses.
  • September - Became an official sponsor of the Master Builder's guide to site safety.
  • October - Changed our name from Trade Insure to Trade Risk.
  • November - Office relocation to Albany Creek.

If 2010 has been another year that you've left yourself under-insured, then let's do something about it and make sure that you can power into 2011 with the peace of mind that comes with having a good risk management plan in place.

As a special bonus for anyone who arranges an appointment at our Albany Creek office between Monday 20th December 2010 and Friday 7th January 2011, we'll give you a free carton of beer! It's our way of thanking you for taking some time out of your holidays to talk to us about insurance.

Not keen on beer? We'll happily swap it for a bottle of basic spirits.

Christmas Opening Hours

Our office won't be officially closing over the Christmas break, but don't expect us to be answering the phones on Christmas day or New Year's Day! If you need to get in contact please call the office and leave a message, or send an email and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Christmas and Family

Christmas means different things to different people, but one thing we all have in common is that we use the Christmas break as a chance to spend time with our families and loved ones, and reflect on how much they mean to us.

We also look back on the year that has passed, satisfied with our work and glad that we've made it through another year safely. But for every year that we get through safely, the odds start to stack up against us...

I don't like using "scare tactics" to promote insurance, but it's a simple fact that tradespeople are more likely than any other profession to have a period of time away from work due to injury or illness.

For many it will just be a simple broken arm or leg that results in a few months off the tools, but everyday there are tradies around Australia who suffer injuries that leave them unable to work ever again.

You may think you could handle living on a Centrelink disability pension, but do your wife and children deserve to live on welfare for the rest of their lives?

We all work bloody hard to build a better life for ourselves and our families, so don't risk losing it all just because you don't want to spend a few dollars a day to protect the most important asset you'll ever have.

I don't need insurance...

Last month I was talking to a builder who wanted some public liability insurance, but wasn't interested in income protection. I was keen to know why, and here's how the conversation went:

Builder: I don't need income protection mate.
Shane: Why is that?
Builder: We have a couple of investment properties, so I'd just sell one if I needed the money.
Shane: Do you have your cars insured?
Builder: Yeah, of course we do.
Shane: Why? Couldn't you just sell one of your investment properties if you were in a crash?
Builder: Yeah, but...

It still bothers me that people will pay top dollar to insure their $40,000 car, but won't insure their income that could potentially be worth millions over their working life.

When it comes to car insurance, I often hear things like "what if I crashed into a Rolls Royce". But think about this: a 25 year old on $50,000 a year will earn a whopping $3.9 million during their working life! That's quite a lot more than any Rolls Royce will cost you.

I know I harp on about income protection sometimes, but I honestly believe it is the most important insurance that anyone can have, especially if you're a tradesman.

Do yourself and your family a favour and contact me for a chat about how inexpensive it could be to get some proper income protection.

Merry Christmas!

I'd like to wish all of my clients a very merry Christmas and a sensational new year.

If you're not yet one of my clients, then I recommend that you make 2011 the year that you switch to an insurance adviser who understands the needs of tradespeople and actually cares about their clients.
