Newsletter - September 2011

I hope you and your business are going well.

There's been plenty going on in the economy since our last newsletter, but I'm pleased to report that the doom and gloom hasn't appeared to have hurt our clients.

Each month we continue to get more and more tradies wanting us to look after their insurance, and most tradespeople I speak with are telling me how busy they are.

This is in stark contrast with the negative reports you see on television, but in my opinion it's because our Trade Risk tradies are out there making it happen rather than sitting around complaining about the economy!

Here's what you'll find in our September newsletter:

Which do you value more - your wife or your tools?

A lot of tradies believe they don't need insurance that will cover them in the event of death, critical illness or permanent disability. We think we're bulletproof, and as a young bloke myself I can definitely relate to that.

But it's not just us blokes who need cover, what about our wives and partners? Recently I insured my partner using Macquarie's new Life Active cover, and it is so reassuring to know that if she was to suffer a critical illness or injury, we'll have a big pile of cash to access the best doctors and medical treatment the world can offer.

What's more valuable to you - your wife or your tools? The answer should be obvious, but if both were damaged, would your insurance pay more for your tools than your wife? For many of us the answer would be yes, which is definitely something to think about.

I'm young, what do I need trauma insurance for?

I'm betting that a lot of you have never heard of trauma insurance. But don't worry, you're not alone. Australia has one of the lowest rates of cover in the developed world when it comes to trauma insurance.

What is trauma insurance? Trauma insurance pays you a lump sum if you suffer a critical illness. Although there are dozens of conditions covered, the most common claims come from cancer, heart attack and stroke.

If you're a young bloke like me, you're probably thinking, why do I need trauma insurance? I'm too young to worry about those things!

But as a tradie and as an Australian, there is one thing many of us have in common - we spend a LOT of time out in the sun. And you know what a lot of sun exposure can lead to - skin cancer.

If caught early enough, some skin cancers can simply be cut out during day surgery. But not everyone is that lucky. Here are a few stats to think about:

  • 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70
  • Over 1,700 Australians die from skin cancer each year
  • Skin cancers account for about 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year in Australia
  • Over 430,000 Australians are treated for skin cancer each year - over 1,100 people every day
  • For those aged 15 to 44, melanoma is the most common cancer
If you were diagnosed with a melanoma, wouldn't you want to give yourself the best possible chance of survival? Wouldn't you want to have the financial resources to fight off the cancer? If not for yourself, think about your family.

Trauma insurance can be of huge assistance by paying you a lump sum in the event of suffering a melanoma, or the dozens of other critical illnesses covered.

For a 26 year old carpenter, you can access cover of $250,000 for around $8 a week. Bundle it in with your income protection and the cost will be even lower.

I have trauma insurance myself, and in my opinion you'd be mad not to have some cover at that price.
