The most common type of insurance required by tradies in Brisbane, and throughout Australia for that matter, is public liability insurance.

Public liability covers you and your business for any property damage or personal injury that is caused due to your work. If one of your customers or a member of the general public suffers a loss and attempts to sue you, the financial damages will be covered by your insurance.

An alternative to income protection is accident and illness insurance, which is also known as sickness and injury insurance. Whilst the covers are similar there are some important differences, and generally a proper income protection policy will offer the highest level of protection.

In addition to income protection many tradesmen choose to take out life insurance and TPD insurance. Another good option is trauma insurance, although this cover tends to be less popular with younger tradies.

Any tradesman working in Brisbane will naturally come under the rules set by the Queensland State Government. Most of the rules regarding tradesman insurance in Queensland are fairly similar to the other Australian states, however there are a few important exceptions.

For any electrician working in Brisbane or elsewhere in Queensland you will need a special form of public liability insurance which includes consumer protection cover. This cover is required even if your business is not based in Queensland but does undertake work here.

This insurance is only available from a small number of insurers, so it is important to choose an insurer that can provide the special certificate of currency required for your Qld electrical contractors licence renewal or application.

Most other forms of trade insurance are fairly similar between the states, however it is important to check this with your insurance broker before taking out a policy.
