Which trade would you rate as the most trusted in Australia?
As well as being one of the country’s highest earning trades, electricians can now pat themselves on the back for being Australia’s most trusted!
This is according to hipages and their ‘Tradie Trust Index’ which was recently released for 2019.
* Trade Risk has no affiliation whatsoever with hipages. We understand that some tradies don’t speak particularly highly of the website, but we still felt that the results of their survey may be interesting to our clients.
Stuart Tucker, chief customer officer of hipages, revealed that electricians are the most commonly hired trade in Australia. It’s unclear if this is overall, or just out of the work done via hipages.
“When hiring an electrician, it’s more often an emergency situation with your local sparky coming to the rescue,” Mr Tucker said.
“Almost 50 per cent of an electrician’s jobs are emergency or ad hoc.”
The Daily Telegraph interviewed Pymble-based electrician Michael Harvey about the results, and he believed it was due to electrician’s high level of qualifications:
“It’s such a hard trade itself to get in nowadays, because in terms of TAFE qualifications it’s massive now,” he told The Daily Telegraph.
“There are three years of theory training and four years on the tools and all the tests you have to pass at TAFE — you have to get 65 per cent and above in every single section.”
The survey included a number of other interesting findings:
Australian’s hire seven tradies each year on average
This seems quite high, but that’s what they’re saying. But given that the survey was for hipages users, perhaps they are people more likely to be hiring trades each year…?
If correct, this means there should be plenty of work around for tradies prepared to look for it.
Two in five Australians don’t check a tradies licence
This is scary, but completely unsurprising. We imagine the number of customers checking a tradie’s insurance would be even lower.
It only takes a few minutes to ask a tradie to see their licence and public liability certificate, so why more people don’t do it is beyond us.
