The Volkswagen Amarok hasn’t been a raging sales success like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, but they seem to be popular enough amongst tradies.

The current model has been around for a while now though.  They were released in 2010 and look pretty much identical.

An all-new Amarok will be launched in 2022, and the design concept they’ve released is pretty wild!

Of course the real thing won’t look quite like this, but it is an image released by Volkswagen, not just a rendering done by some random on the internet.

Built by Ford

Volkswagen won’t be building them though.  They’re being built by the same people who build Australia’s second most popular ute – Ford.

The 2022 Amarok will be based on the new Ford Ranger, using the same engineering and architecture, and even built in Ford’s factory.

Volkswagen Australia’s commercial vehicle boss, Ryan Davies, seemed pretty happy with the tie-up when speaking to CarAdvice:

“It’s a good story for us, the fact that we’ve got a global alliance with Ford on three key products, and having key influences from the Australian market in the development of the Amarok and the Ranger success is a really good news story for both customers of Ford and ourselves. We’re pretty excited about the prospects there.”

Given how popular the Ranger is amongst tradies in Australia, do you think the new Amarok will be a hit if they can get the styling right?

If it looks anything like the image they’ve released, you’d have to think so!

What about the Mazda BT50?

Up until recently the Mazda BT50 has shared a lot with the Ford Ranger.  Some people think the Ranger is a re-badged BT50, but in reality it’s more like the other way around.

Instead the next BT50 will be a tie-up with the new Isuzu D-Max, and apparently the next Triton and Navara will also share a lot of common parts.

Tradies will still have the same choice of badges when buying a new ute, but underneath the skin there will only be a couple of genuinely different vehicles.
