Stolen Tools

A new Facebook page has been setup to help tradies who have had their tools stolen.

The page titled ‘Stolen Tradies Gear‘ allows tradespeople from all over Australia to share information when their gear is knocked off.

The page has only been active for two months, but already more than 7,000 tradies have signed up to the page.

It’s quite incredible to see the amount of gear that goes missing every week around the country, and the Facebook page is probably only picking up a tiny fraction of the thefts.

A pleasing aspect about the page is that way in which other tradies share the posts about other tradies who’ve had their gear stolen.

This is really what the page is all about. It allows tradies to post about their stolen gear so that thousands of other tradies can quickly spread the word.

Tip from other tradesmen

A recent post about a tradie on the Sunshine Coast prompted plenty of conversation about insuring your tools.

This carpenter had over $20,000 worth of equipment stolen, but sadly did not have any of the gear insured as he felt the premiums were too high.

Comments from other tradies showed that tool insurance is definitely something worth considering:

“I feel for any tradie that gets his tools stolen but seriously it costs me an extra $20 a month to insure all my tools valued at 10 grand! So for a total monthly premium of $110 my tools are covered and I have my 20mil public liability taken care of.” Corey.

“My old man taught me a valuable lesson in life… If you can’t afford to insure yourself for it… Then you can’t afford to do it in the first place… Took me a while to learn it, but now I’ve got everything insured, and living in Melbourne… It’s paid itself off ten-fold. I feel for the bloke, but seriously if he had the option to insure but didn’t because it was too expensive, why didn’t he think of how expensive it would be if he got his tools knocked off? Scumbag act, but it happens. This is why we get insurance.” Wilem.

Unfortunately other tradies had gone through the same situation, but without tool insurance:

“Had the same thing happen to me a few years back… Absolutely ****ed me for the ability to work then the ability to buy back all the tools… Took about 12 months to get back to where I was with a full setup again…” Nick.

Tradesman trailer

Another great tip is to take a photo of your trailer if you have one.

A number of tradies have posted pictures of their trailers that have been stolen, and people seem to be far more willing to share these posts than those without photos.

A photo will also help in tracking down your trailer if you can get the word out quickly enough.

Help out a fellow tradie

There a few things worse for a tradesman than having your tools stolen.

The aim of the Stolen Tradies Gear Facebook page is to help get the word out quickly when thieves are in a certain area, and to help track down stolen tools.

If you haven’t already become a fan of the page, get on there today and become part of the community.
